Is myduke® an ‘authorised prescriber’?

Is myduke® an ‘authorised prescriber’?

Short answer: yes. myduke® is an authorised prescriber of nicotine products for the cessation of smoking, and you can purchase these products through the My Duke Pharmacy.

Vaping in Australia has become more complicated in the last few years, and it’s important to understand your limitations when it comes to nicotine vapes. The days of buying dodgy vapes from behind the counter at tobacconists and bottle shops are over. And that’s a very good thing.

Here's everything you need to know about the current state of play.

Vaping under Australian law

As it stands, all nicotine vaping products in Australia require a prescription from an authorised medical professional.

It’s also illegal to purchase nicotine vapes through anything other than a licenced pharmacy, such as My Duke. Tobacconists, retailers and convenience stores cannot sell nicotine vapes in Australia, and any who do are breaking the law.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration

The TGA has introduced a new standard for nicotine vaping products, known as the Therapeutic Goods (Standard for Nicotine Vaping Products (TGO 110) Order 2021 (TGO110)). This came into effect on 1 October 2021 and includes minimum safety and quality requirements for unapproved nicotine vaping products.

All vaping products dispensed by My Duke Pharmacy meet the new standard, including:

  • What information is needed on the product’s label.
  • What child-resistant packaging is needed.
  • Limits on the concentration of nicotine in the product, and for actual nicotine concentration to reflect what’s on the label.
  • Ingredients that are prohibited in these products.
  • Records that need to be kept by the Australian sponsor for the product.

Dispensing nicotine

Australian law requires a valid prescription for all purchases of nicotine vaping products, and these products have to be purchased through a registered pharmacy, like My Duke.

My Duke Pharmacy is authorised to dispense liquid nicotine for smoking cessation, but we’ll only do so if you’re a verified patient and your order is accompanied with a prescription from an Australian Authorised Prescriber.

This won’t be an issue for most customers, since the whole prescription process is managed by myduke® (for free). If it’s your first order, a pharmacist will be in touch to validate your ID over the phone, just like any other prescription medication.

Why go through an ‘authorised supplier’?

For starters, it’s the only legal way to buy nicotine vaping products in Australia. So that’s important. Beyond that, by using authorised prescribers like My Duke Pharmacy, you know you’re sourcing high-quality vaping products, without any toxic additives like THC, Vitamin E acetate, diacetyl or acetyl propionyl. The same guarantee can’t be made for black market vapes, or products purchased without a valid pharmacy prescription.
